Birdman has come a long way since his start in the music business, and he has now reflected on his carefree antics from back when the money started rolling in.
During an episode of Renaissance Man that went live on Wednesday (January 24), host Jalen Rose pointed out that Baby ushered in the “bling-bling era” of Hip Hop, which the mogul said was a product of coming from having nothing.
“In New Orleans, we ain’t know nothing about none of that,” he began. “We ain’t know nothing about Rolls Royces and foreign whips. We wore Dickies suits, dope boys — that was normal for our city.
“Honestly I went to New York and seen them n-ggas in foreign cars and all that shit … n-ggas rocking big chains and I’m like, ‘Man, I’ma bring that shit down bottom.’ We ain’t never seen this shit down bottom, and that what influenced me, bro.”
He proceeded to explain that he and his crew subsequently began spending without restraint, saying: “We just turnt up. We was treating cars like it was nothing — doing donuts in ’em, wrecking ’em.
“I bought 50 whips for everybody. 15,000 was the maximum [I spent] for some of them, but a couple of my partners, I spent a little more, but yeah, everybody in the project that had a license, I bought them a car.”
Whereas dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars on vehicles is a common practice in Hip Hop, Killer Mike and Maxo Kream believe it’s better for younger participants of the culture to save their money and practice financial abstinence.
Earlier this week, 21-year-old rapper Liljitm3n shared a series of Instagram Stories in which he brandished his latest purchase: a Honda Accord. Contrary to a lot of his peers, he seems to have held on to a large portion of his earnings instead of spending it on a more expensive car.
“MY FIRST CAR FRESH OFF DA LOT BRAND NEW BOUGHT WITH MY OWN MONEY,” the Florida native bragged. “No more asking for rides im rich I got enough money to buy A BENZ I WANTED A HONDA ACCORD [middle-finger emoji, snake emoji, gorilla emoji].”
“Brilliant!” Killer Mike wrote in the comments section of a Say Cheese TV post about the humble flex, while Maxo Kream added: “I fucc wit this lil nicca.”
Quality Control Music CEO Pierre “P” Thomas and Yella Beezy also applauded the move in the replies for its long-term practicality.
