Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys have offered the world plenty of original material, and they are now branching out to curating an exhibition of work by other artists.
On Friday (January 5), the power couple announced their plan to display their private collection of paintings, sculptures and more at the Brooklyn Museum. ‘GIANTS: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys’ will open on February 10 and will feature works by Gordon Parks, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lorna Simpson, Kehinde Wiley, and Nina Chanel Abney, among others.
“‘Giants’ refers to several aspects of the Dean Collection: the renown of legendary artists, the impact of canon-expanding contemporary artists, and the monumental works by such creators as Derrick Adams, Arthur Jafa, and Meleko Mokgosi,” the venue’s website shared.
“Immense pieces—including the largest ever by Mokgosi—are paired with standouts such as Parks’s seminal photographs, Wiley’s revolutionary portraits, and Esther Mahlangu’s globe-bridging canvases.
“The term also evokes the strength of the bonds between the Deans and the artists they support, and among the artists themselves. Along with examining these links and legacies, the exhibition will encourage ‘giant conversations’ inspired by the works on view—critiquing society and celebrating Blackness.”
The exhibit runs until July 7. Tickets are available here.
Whereas the Deans are putting together a display made up of work by other creatives, JAY-Z shared a number of artifacts from his own timeline at the “Book of HOV” Exhibit last year.
A few months back, the curators added to the presentation a ’90s Lexus, similar to the one used in one of his most iconic music videos and featured in the lyrics of some of his biggest records.
In mid-September, Jigga’s landmark “off-white Lexus” installation made its debut, accompanied with the press statement: “Roc Nation and Lexus proudly announce the addition of a 1993 Lexus GS 300 at The Book of HOV, an immersive exhibit at Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Location.
“The iconic Lexus was first featured in JAY-Z’s ‘Dead Presidents’ visual, and then in the lyrics of ‘Can I Live’ and the #1 hit, ‘Empire State Of Mind.’ Situated alongside the Central Library on Eastern Parkway, the Lexus is the first of artifacts that will be added to The Book Of HOV.”
Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez wrote: “We’re excited to partner with Lexus to bring JAY-Z’s iconic ‘Off-White Lexus’ to The Book of HOV. The new installation adds another element of JAY-Z’s career to the exhibit that visitors can enjoy.
“The response to The Book Of HOV has been overwhelming, so we’re excited to extend the exhibit to December to ensure new and returning attendees can have enough opportunities to fully immerse themselves into the experience.”
The exhibition closed in early December.
