Lil Wayne will be headed home — at least figuratively — at the Roots Picnic this year.
The Cash Money rhymer is one of the festival’s just-announced headliners, along with Nas, Gunna, Jill Scott, Victoria Monét and André 3000 — the latter performing in support of his instrumental album New Blue Sun.
Weezy’s set is billed as a tribute to the rapper’s hometown and will see him perform alongside The Roots, PJ Mortant, Trombone Shorty and others.
The festival will take place at The Mann in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia on June 1 and 2. Pre-sale tickets are available on Tuesday (February 20) beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern. More information is available at the festival’s website.
Among the festival’s other notable acts are Cam’ron, Sexyy Red, Scarface, and an annual highlight, DJ J.Period’s “Live Mixtape,” this time featuring Roots rhymer Black Thought, Method Man and Redman.
In addition, musical director to the stars Adam Blackstone will be re-teaming with Fantastia, with whom he performed at this year’s Grammys, along with Muni Long, for his “Legacy Experience” show.
André 3000’s set will come a few months after his tour in support ofNew Blue Sun wraps up. The trek, announced last month and ongoing as of this writing, is his first-ever solo excursion.
3 Stacks is joined on the road by some of the musicians who co-produced his debut solo LP, including Carlos Niño, Nate Mercereau, Surya Botofasina and Deantoni Parks.
The Roots Picnic was notable last year for its Fugees reunion. Questlove was present, and took a video of the once-in-a-lifetime event.
“What A Night. In 1993 an unknown band called the Fugees (at the request of the record label i interned at @ruffhouserecords) opened up for us at #TheTrocodero in Philadelphia—-this was one of their first gigs since signing to a major label,” he wrote in the caption. “They were there to help us celebrate our signing to @geffenrecords. Their #BluntedOnReality got released in early 93. We got our deal in Dec 93 & man…”
He continued: “Now 30 years later & look at us now. What a journey. @MsLaurynHill did us a solid by letting us not only letting us celebrate with her the classic #MiseducationOfLaurynHill but she also made a moment by bringing together her bredren @WyclefJean & @PrasMichel ……in what could possibly be one of the last times we will see this institution together in this setting.”
