Cardi B‘s friendship with accused gang leader Star Brim has been brought up by the accused’s attorneys in a plea for a reduced sentence.
According to court documents obtained by HipHopDX, attorney Isabelle Kirshner filed the letter on Wednesday (February 14). In it, she told Judge Greg Daniels that her client (real name Yonette Davis) had turned her life around since her arrest, and that her friendship with the “Bodak Yellow” rapper played a part in that turnaround.
“Her Instagram presence grew tremendously because of her friendship with Belcalis Almanzar, better known as Cardi B,” Kirshner wrote. “Throughout the years, Star has developed skin care products, advertised other products and became an ‘influencer’ – which has allowed her to earn additional income.”
Kirshner went on to provide additional letters from other associates of Star’s, all of whom attested to her growth as a person and as a mother. For these reasons, Kirshner said, Judge Greg Daniels should be lenient in his sentencing of the accused gang leader — and that the sentencing not include jail time.
“Accordingly, we respectfully request that this Court impose a non-incarceratory sentence upon Ms. Davis, which is “sufficient, but not greater than necessary” to satisfy the ends of justice,” she concluded the letter.

Brim was initially sentenced in 2018 after pleading guilty to wire fraud. She was released in early 2019 and became pregnant with her first child shortly thereafter.
Then, in 2020, Star Brim was caught up in a federal sweep of the New York Bloods Gang subset, 5-9 Brims.
At that time, according to the Department of Justice, Brim was amongst one of the 18 members charged with various racketeering, narcotics, and firearms offenses, including murder and attempted murder.
Brim was also identified in the case of an alleged violent assault that initial reports claimed involved Cardi B. The violence was directed against two sisters working as bartenders at the Queens strip club Angel’s back in August of 2018.
It was first reported Cardi herself ordered the attack on the two bartenders, now identified as Rachel and Sarah Wattley, but court documents reveal it was Star who allegedly commissioned the hit while doing prison time in Connecticut that same year.
Star was charged with racketeering and for the ordering of subordinates to “pop that bottle” on one of the women, whom Cardi believed to have slept with her husband Offset.
Police named Star as a high-ranking gang member known to The Brims as their “godmother.” She reportedly called the shots and was said to be “dissatisfied” over the outcome of the attack, which wasn’t as violent as she’d hoped.
Two weeks later, Bardi and her crew got into a heated exchange with the Wattley sisters around 3 a.m. Security footage shows the “Money” artist throwing an ice bucket at the two girls as they were bartending. According to the indictment, one of the bartenders suffered lacerations to her legs and feet.
