Ice Spice is being sued for allegedly stealing her hit single “In Ha Mood” from another rapper who hails from New York.
According to TMZ, rapper D.Chamberz claims that Spice copied the beat, lyrics, hook, rhyme structure, metrical placement and narrative of his January 2022 track “In That Mood.”
He claims that he made the song an entire year before the Bronx rap star released “In Ha Mood,” which came out in January 2023 and appears on her debut EP Like..?
Chamberz (real name Duval Chamberlain) claims in the suit that Ice Spice and her producer RiotUSA could have heard his version of the song as he worked as a DJ in New York and that “In That Mood” also received radio play in the city.
Chamberz is allegedly seeking half of Ice Spice’s publishing rights to the song as well as other revenues, plus damages for copyright infringement.
The two songs can be heard below.
At the time of writing, “In Ha Mood” has almost 170 million streams on Spotify and its video has 45 million view on YouTube. Ice Spice also performed the song on Saturday Night Live last year.
The 24-year-old has yet to respond to the lawsuit, though there are some similarities between the two tracks including their beat and rhyme structure.
Ice Spice has had a rapid rise to fame since dropping her debut single “Munch (Feelin’ U)” in 2022 which quickly went viral on TikTok.
She was the second most Googled musician in all of 2023, behind controversial country star Jason Aldean.
Ice Spice reacted to the news by joking on X (formerly Twitter): “Nosey much?”
Because of her fast rise, she has also had to deal with allegations of being an “industry plant”, which she denies.
In a recent interview with Variety, the rapper said: “A lot of people have thrown that in my face — like ‘Oh, I’ve never seen anything happen so quickly. She needs to be studied,’ or ‘She’s a plant.’
“I just let people believe whatever they want to believe, to be honest. I don’t really mind all the rumors. At first, I did, but now I’m at a point where I understand that just comes with this lifestyle.”
A packed 2023 also saw her collaborate with Taylor Swift and release two songs with Nicki Minaj, one of which appeared on the Barbie soundtrack.
Ice Spice is also nominated for four Grammys at the upcoming 2024 ceremony, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Song (“Barbie World”) and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Karma”).
