Madlib has paid tribute to the late MF DOOM on the 20th anniversary of their collaborative album Madvillainy.

Saturday (March 23) marked two decades since the release of Madvillain’s classic album, which came out on Stones Throw Records and was the pair’s only project together.

The Beat Konducta commemorated the milestone on Sunday (March 24) by sharing a clip on Instagram from the “All Caps” video.

The clip featured the words: “Madvillainy20. RIPMFDOOM,” while Madlib also wrote in his caption: “20 years. RIP to the Villain.”

Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf also celebrated 20 years of Madvillainy by sharing some random facts about the album in a comment on Complex Music‘s Instagram page.

“This was an album where Madlib chose to record the beats in my basement that we called The Bomb Shelter (it was a literally a concrete bomb shelter),” he wrote.

“DOOM recorded his vocals in my bedroom down the hall where we also had @ecoleye do a photo shoot that became the album cover.”

He added: “The LA release party was at The Fonda (a modest sized venue) and we stacked the bill w/ me, J Rocc, Madlib, Dilla, and Common, besides (the headliner) DOOM because we were afraid it wouldn’t sell out.

“We did a few more shows that month with the same lineup in a few major markets to small but very excited crowds.

“That was it in terms of promotion, besides doing 3 LOW BUDGET music videos (2 in the same day) that I convinced DOOM into reluctantly doing. It’s the first (and only) album on my 28 year old label to go gold.”

Last year, Madlib revealed that the long-awaited sequel Madvillainy 2 was still on the way despite MF DOOM’s death in 2020.

“We have like 10 joints,” he told Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg. “[It’s] just not complete. It’s more like a demo to me because we didn’t piece it together or anything and some of them it sounds like he just did one take and that’s it.”

He added: “[But] I’m gonna finish it. I gotta change a lot of the beats because some of the beats were used also.”

Madlib said they started the recording process right after Madvillainy was released in 2004. However, DOOM only recorded a couple songs per year.
