Rivian teases new R2 EV display ahead of full reveal next month Leave a comment

We are one month away from the official unveiling of the R2 EV(s) – Rivian’s second model of all-electric trucks. Naturally, the American automaker has begun dangling the zero-emissions carrot in front of the public, teasing us with tiny glimpses of what could and should be a smaller, more affordable alternative to its flagship models.

Rivian ($RIVN) remains a relatively young EV automaker that appears to have just hit its stride in scaled production last year after evading several hurdles surrounding supply chain issues and assembly optimization.

While the automaker’s catalog of flagship R1T and R1S EVs continues to grow and more and more of the models join public roads next to its delivery vans for Amazon, many eyes have been on its encore – the R2.

Touted as a smaller and more affordable counter to the R1s with an arrival expected by Rivian to be equivalent to “Tesla’s Model 3 moment,” the R2 has garnered a lot of intrigue in the past nine months or so, especially after Rivian confirmed its arrival was imminent. As with many new models, its makers have remained clandestine, and glimpses up to this point have been rather anemic.

The hype train really gained some steam in late January, when a patent filed offered a glimpse of what the new Rivian model may look like… at least as a schematic. Plans for a “global launch event” at Rivian’s flagship Space in Laguna Beach, CA hinted that we might be seeing the new R2 this March.

On February 5, Rivian founder CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed the March 7th unveiling while standing in front of a sheeted clay model of the incoming EV. Today, the automaker shared a brief but tasty peek at what the view will look like from the driver’s seat… well, maybe not the background, but definitely the foreground. Have a gander.

Rivian’s new dash display looks smaller, more seamless

The new image above was posted by Rivian on X today, alongside the caption, “Good things ahead. (mountain emoji, snowflake emoji, lightning bolt emoji.”

As you can see from the comparison image above, that is definitely not an R1T or R1S. The driver’s display is smaller, trapezoidal, and appears more integrated into the dash than its older sibling. Given the gorgeous vista beyond the steering wheel, we’d imagine the nature-focused EV brand will showcase some stellar product images of the R2 when it finally arrives.

As previously mentioned, the full reveal will take place on March 7, and we will be there in person to catch the first glimpse and report back to you. Perhaps we will see more of this new Rivian before then? Let’s hope!
