Kirk Franklin has leaned into the long-running joke about his and Plies‘ possible family connection.
In a clip of Franklin’s recent appearance on Club Shay Shay, published on Saturday (December 30), the renowned Gospel singer can be heard telling host Shannon Sharpe why he believes he and the “Shawty” rapper have yet to connect.
“He don’t wanna do nothin’, he be talkin’,” he starts out. “He be runnin’ his mouth. It’s because we were supposed to been done got together. We was gooing to do something in Florida, in Miami; he don’t wanna do nothin’. It’s because I think he’s really, really, really afraid that I could be his daddy.”
Check out the clip below.
Plies has also alluded to their uncanny resemblance, using humor to defuse a much more serious moment in Kirk Franklin’s life.
In March 2021, the “Melodies From Heaven” singer was forced to issue a public apology after his 32-year-old son Kerrion shared an expletive-laced phone call from him to social media. During the conversation, the 16x-Grammy Award winner berated his son for being poor and threatened to stick his foot up his “skinny muthafuckin’ ass.”
“Recently my son and I had an argument that he chose to record,” the choir director said in a video posted via Twitter. “I felt extremely disrespected in that conversation and I lost my temper and I said words that are not appropriate and I am sincerely sorry to all of you. I sincerely apologize.”
But the Fort Myers, Florida-born rapper and former Miami Redskins wide receiver decided not to hold the outburst against the elder Franklin. In fact, he wanted to get him on an album.
The day after Franklin issued his apology, Plies tweeted, “I Gotta Put My Dawg On The Album Now 4real!!!! He Sounded Just Like Me On That Phone Bih!!!! #AintNoneOfUsPerfect.”
In a subsequent tweet, the 44-year-old then decided to let Franklin completely off the hook and blamed himself, writing, “That Was NOT My Dawg On That Phone That Was ME!!!!! #ITakeFullResponsiblityForThoseActions.”
