Trevor Noah has been preparing to host the Grammys again, and he revealed how JAY-Z hyped him up for his first hosting go-around of the popular awards show.

Talking to Variety ahead of the show on Wednesday (January 31), the former Daily Show host revealed that it was Hov’s seemingly offhanded compliment towards his hosting abilities during the pandemic that primed him for the show on Sunday (February 4).

“At the first Grammys I did, during Covid, Jay-Z walked past and was like, “Hey, man, you’ve been doing a good job,” he shared. “I remember being like, “Damn, Jay-Z just told me I’m doing a good job!” Those moments really, really stand out because of how special and unique they were.”

Beyoncé‘s husband doesn’t just have that effect on Trevor Noah.

Back in March, J.I.D recalled “tweaking out” when he met JAY-Z and the Roc Nation boss praising The Forever Story.

During an appearance on the Throwing Fits podcast, the Atlanta rapper told a story about the time he lost all composure when conversing with Hov, who was highly complimentary of his latest album.

“People that I’m a fan of, I don’t give a fuck, Imma fan out,” J.I.D said. “I tweaked out when I met JAY-Z. He fucks with me, and I didn’t tweak out, I was just like, ‘Uh, uh.’ I was [gone off the D’USSE] too.

“‘Cause I met him a couple of years ago, we said ‘wassup,’ that was calm. But this time when I met him, Elliott Wilson introduced us again. He was like, ‘I remember, wassup?’ Then he hit me, he was like, ‘Congrats on the album, I really fuck with it.’

“In my mind, I’m asking questions like, ‘Oh, you heard it? Oh, you know I’m on tour right now?’ and everything, and it came out as just, ‘Thank you.’ And then I got up outta there. Walked away and thought about everything I wanted to say to him, my whole life…”

He added: “It fucked me up. I had so much stuff I wanted to say.”

J.I.D then revealed what he would have said to JAY-Z if he had kept his cool.

“I probably would have asked him something specific and then just been like, ‘Yo, I quoted you like seven times on the album. You should probably sue me or say you fuck with me,’” he joked. “Not that many [times], but a handful of inspiration.”
